Grant is the grandfather of Austin Olds. Austin Olds is a race car driver. Grant, or PaPa, as Austin calls him is now the crew chief for Austin Olds Racing. Austin Olds Racing has been a supporter of Racing 2 Cure since the team's inception primarily due to the loss of Austin's maternal grandpa, Bill Agnew, to cancer in 2013, and other close family members. Bill was an avid motorcycle and kart racer for most of his life. It was Bill's legacy which inspired the Olds family to embark on a racing career for young Austin. But, Austin and the AOR Mafia, a nickname that was given to the team by other racers due to the team wearing black shirts to hide the grease, has recently established a new, much more important goal for 2016.
In late January 2016, Austin's PaPa, Grant Olds, was diagnosed with glioblastoma, which is a type of cancer that forms tumors in the brain. There is no clear cause or no known cure for this cancer at this time. Clinical trials are being held on an ongoing basis, although Grant has not qualified for any of those trials to date. Grant underwent surgery on February 1, 2016 to have a tumor removed from the left rear lobe of the brain. However, another tumor exists which is located in an area of the brain that is inoperable. Grant will be involved with heavy chemo and radiation therapy in the coming months.
The #1 goal of the Austin Olds Racing team has now been escalated to raise funding for the fight against cancer. Grant is an integral part to our racing team and he has supported and encouraged Austin and his racing since day 1!
